Eclipse in Kenya 15 January 2010

I've just heard about this bonus for anyone in Kenya on 15th January 2010 - an annular eclipse of the sun in which the moon will be in front of the sun, but appearing smaller than the sun, with a ring of sun all round it, so not as intense as a total eclipse.

The timer in Wikipedia's nifty graphic from NASA shows GMT, so it will be three hours later in Kenya.

I'm not sure how spectacular it will be. An operator called Astronomy Tours will be at Lake Nakuru, which I think is currently very rainy/cloudy, but there'll be a partial eclipse throughout Kenya, and anyone in Lamu will also get the full annular effect for 5 minutes.

I thought this was rather exciting - feedback welcome.

  1. Hi,
another topic, but I don't know how to create a new post:
Does anybody know if there is an internet cafe in Oloitokitok, Kenya? Or somewhere else in the area, maybe southwards in direction Taveta? If yes, can you please tell me the exact location? I need to get in contact with someone living in this area and would like to tell him via SMS to go to this internet cafe to be able to exchange e-mails.
    Thanks alot,

  2. Hi Amaryllis

There are several internet cafés in Oloitokitok town. It's a really small place. Your contact could use any one of them to pick up your email at any computer. No problem to do so in Taveta, either. But I don't think there's anywhere with public internet access between these two towns. Possibly Illasit or Rombo.

    Good luck!

  4. I had a wonderful view of the eclipse from Kimilili in Western Kenya. I used a pinhole camera system and it was very clear and easy. Sadly I didn't work out in advance how to photograph it.
Because it was early in the morning and the sun was reasonably low (just after 8am for totality) I could get the image on a wall.

PS I have to post as Anon because I don't know how to do the others!!!

  6. Hi Richard, hi everybody, can someone please tell me about the cheapest way to communicate from handy to handy or handy to festnetz between germany and kenia. We have german handies (vodafon), or the other version: kenian netprovider handy (i dont know which one, have to ask) and vodafon handy in germany.
So far we communicate with mail, but my friend is in 30km distance from Oloitokitok Town, which makes it difficult and expensive. Thanx for comments. hakunamatata
